Art & Music (including fan films)

A Long-Expected Soundscape by Jordan Rannells -30% off right now!-

Imagine walking alongside the Fellowship, immersing yourself in Middle-earth like never before. This incredible project is a chapter-specific audio soundscape crafted to accompany The Lord of the Rings. It syncs seamlessly with Andy Serkis’ official audiobook or can be enjoyed as a standalone experience.

Every detail has been considered—an original score inspired by Howard Shore's work, recorded with themes that evolve and intertwine throughout the journey. Ambient sounds from forests, rivers, and caves are captured with 3D microphones, making you feel like you're truly in places like Fangorn Forest or the Mines of Moria. Add to that meticulously designed sound effects for creatures like Ringwraiths and the Balrog, and you’ve got a fully immersive adventure.

With over 200 hours of audio across 12 mixes—including options for music only, ambience only, or the full experience—this soundscape is perfect for reading along, relaxing, or setting the mood for D&D nights.

(Jordan would never forgive me if I didn’t remind you to grab your headphones for the ultimate listening experience!)

Dave Brons' Celtic Prog Rock in Middle-earth

When I say that Dave's Celtic Prog Rock in Middle-earth is the musical equivalent of The Prancing Pony Podcast, I mean it’s a work brimming with hope, rich emotion, and the magic of faerie. It takes you there and back again—offering rest, recovery, and consolation—while being both warmly familiar and deeply thought-provoking. His music brings Middle-earth to life with fresh perspective and is very much like an old friend playing just for you in a cozy pub.

Before discovering Dave’s music, not even my closest friends could convince me to try prog rock. But the moment I heard his creations, I was hooked. To this day, his is the only prog rock I listen to; it continues to draw me back time and again. I’ve had the privilege of chatting with him and attending his gigs (albeit virtually), and I can confidently say his music is a true labor of love—celebrating Middle-earth, music, and even our world. Each listen is an absolute delight.

MGCoco - Hobbyist Illustrator

I can’t think of a better artist to promote first than the incredible human behind my logos, graphics, and profile pictures. Introduced to her work by a friend, I was instantly captivated by the welcoming warmth and whimsical charm of her digital art. Her style is delightfully cute and brimming with a wholesome view of fantasy worlds. But look closer, and you’ll find she also weaves in meaningful themes—like inclusion and the beauty of the everyday—even amidst the chaos of larger events.

Getting to know her has only deepened my admiration. She’s passionate about advocating for others, addressing important topics with a firm yet graceful approach, and is an absolute joy to work with. Her vision of characters has even expanded how I imagine them myself. If you’re looking for art that inspires and uplifts, I wholeheartedly recommend checking out her work!

Community & Social Media

Voices of Arda

This week, I want to shine a light on Voices of Arda, a collective of Tolkien content creators—a new fellowship adventuring through Middle-earth. Originally founded by the dynamic duo of KnewBettaDoBetta, the outspoken, bold, always-ready-to-chat force of nature, and Kali Cosplay, the gentle, kind, and pun-loving soul, they’ve now expanded into a thriving community. Their fellowship includes incredible creators like airplanefactswithmax, Bard of Arda, Belmont, Bladorthin the Bastard, exlibrismir, Kaia Kay, Kali Cosplay, The Middle Page, KnewBettaDoBetta, SilmarilLeanne, and Tolkien with Friends.

Together, they are a treasure trove of Tolkien goodness—hosting discussions, diving deep into lore, sharing trivia, uncovering merch, creating unforgettable cosplay, and offering endless shenanigans, videos, and adventures. Their content is as diverse as it is inspiring.

As they navigate the potential TikTok ban, they’re transitioning to new platforms, so be sure to check their link trees and follow them wherever they land. Watching their growing success, their passion for Tolkien, and the way they’ve formed such a strong fellowship is nothing short of inspiring. Don’t miss out on this incredible group!

Gaming

Where to begin with Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO)? It’s a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that blends the events of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings with expansive 'Elsewhere in Middle-earth' content.

The Story and Setting

The main epic questline runs parallel to the books, intersecting with iconic moments from Frodo and the Fellowship’s journey while also delving into events beyond the War of the Ring—like Aragorn’s reign as king. The game is brimming with Easter eggs from Tolkien's legendarium, with rich textual and landscape ruins that make Middle-earth feel alive.

Wander through an enormous map, from the cozy Shire to the depths of Moria, the beauty of Ithilien, the majesty of Minas Tirith, and even to the Black Gates. It’s a dream for any fan of Middle-earth.

Races and Classes

You can create characters from a variety of races, including Elves (both Moriquendi and Calaquendi), Dwarves, Hobbits, and Men. Classes are loosely inspired by characters in the legendarium, offering unique playstyles for every adventurer.

Getting Started

To play, sign up for an account and download the game directly from LOTRO’s official site. While the graphics are dated, this allows the game to run on a wide range of systems. (Pro tip: Skip Steam and download it directly!) Mac users can still play using programs like CodeWeaver, though native support is no longer available.

LOTRO is free-to-play, but spending money can enhance the experience. For example, a single month of VIP membership upgrades you to Premium status with lasting perks. You can also earn LOTRO store points in-game, though it can be a grind.

Gameplay Highlights

The game includes:

🏹 Raids (similar to dungeons in other MMOs)

🏹 Instances (details here)

🏹 Seasonal Festivals (learn more)

It’s also a visual and narrative treat for Tolkien fans. You can relive Boromir’s last stand, explore the ruins of Eregion, witness the sack of Moria, and much more. The game even expands on less-explored areas, like the struggles of the Dunlendings and the history of Umbar.

Pro Tips for Enjoying the Game

𐃈 Take your time and savor the journey. LOTRO is best enjoyed at your own pace.

𐃈 Use resources like LOTRO Wiki and FibroJedi’s - Guides for reference.

𐃈 Complete the tutorials—they’re invaluable for learning mechanics like skills and traits. (Read about Traits)

𐃈 Consider joining a community. Playing solo is great, but a kinship (guild) can offer support and camaraderie.

My Personal Journey

LOTRO introduced me to Tolkien’s world and has remained my favorite Middle-earth adaptation for 14 years. Highlights for me include:

🛡️ Seeing the Grey Company’s story unfold.

🛡️ Discovering hidden lore like Arvedui’s wreck and the Stone of Erech.

🛡️ Exploring Moria and marveling at Meduseld.

🛡️ Growing to appreciate Radagast while despising Saruman’s manipulations.

LOTRO has made me laugh, cry, and fall even deeper in love with Tolkien’s world.

The Core of the Original - Teaching With Magic

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Teaching with Magic host Elise Trudel Cedeño speak. Her passion for teaching kids and sparking a love for fantasy was immediately contagious, and it’s only grown with each episode of her inspiring podcast.

This week’s holiday-themed episode is a real treat, featuring the incredible Dr. Maggie Parke, professor and Director of Signum Studios at Signum University. Together, Elise and Dr. Parke dive into the art of film adaptations—perfect for those days when students (and teachers!) just want to watch a movie. They explore how adaptation theory can help students critique and analyze films, think creatively about texts, and enjoy different mediums’ takes on beloved stories.

Dr. Parke brings a treasure trove of experience to the conversation as a professor and Director of Signum Studios. Her fascinating background includes research on major films like Twilight and Captain America, working on The Lord of the Rings Online game, and co-hosting Rings and Realms.

Writings (blogs, books, etc.)

The Lore Master: Blog Tolkien Indonesia

I’ve admired Putri’s insightful perspectives from the very first time I heard her questions and story on The Prancing Pony Podcast. Her ability to connect her own culture, as well as others, to Tolkien’s works is nothing short of inspiring. Her blog, Putri2Wotan, continues to enrich and captivate me with its evocative exploration of Tolkien’s world through a unique cultural lens. Putri digs deep into the texts themselves, offering fresh interpretations and thoughtful reflections that resonate long after you’ve read them. If you’re looking for a blog that brings together Tolkien’s world and broader cultural insights in a meaningful way, this is a must-read.

Thoughts on Tolkien

If you're looking for a blog that dives deep into Tolkien's works with vast knowledge and thoughtful reflection, I highly recommend Thoughts on Tolkien. Ian’s expertise in Tolkien’s world is impressive, and what I find particularly enriching is how he connects Tolkien’s faith, his works, and his own personal faith in a meaningful and insightful way. While his reflections are deeply personal, they always maintain a strong focus on Tolkien's words and works themselves, offering readers a rich, grounded understanding of Middle-earth. If you’re interested in exploring Tolkien's themes from both a literary and spiritual perspective, Ian’s blog is a must-read.

The Tolkienist's Roving Ranger and more

I’m excited to promote a blog and email newsletter that I truly enjoy and find inspiring: TheTolkienist.com by Marcel R. Bülles. Marcel was the first Tolkien content creator I ever followed, and he has been a huge inspiration to me in shaping how I want to contribute to the Tolkien community. His blog offers a wealth of insights into worldwide Tolkien fandom, geekdom, and research, drawing on over 25 years of experience in Middle-earth. From news on literary societies and fan clubs to reviews, reports, and rants on all things Tolkien and fantasy, Marcel’s content is a must-read for any Tolkien enthusiast.

What I truly admire about Marcel is his dedication to bringing people together who share a love for Tolkien’s life and works. Whether it’s through his involvement in the German Tolkien Society, co-founding RingCon (now MagicCon), or his work with various Tolkien groups and social media communities, he embodies the spirit of connection within fandom. You can also look forward to exciting additions like his podcast, Asleep in Arda, which reads out entries from the leading Tolkien wiki, Tolkien Gateway.

If you're looking to dive deeper into Tolkien fandom and connect with a passionate, knowledgeable creator, I highly encourage supporting Marcel’s Steady Adventure! You won’t regret it.
